El pasado viernes 21 de agosto se estrenó en las salas de nuestro país la película Enemigos Públicos, una de las cintas más esperadas para este 2009, que fue dirigida por Michael Mann, y contó con las actuaciones estelares de Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, y la ganadora del Oscar en 2008, la francesa Marion Cotillard. Dedicaremos el programa de este fin de semana a escuchar en estreno esta banda sonora, publicada bajo el reconocido sello discográfico británico, Decca Records.
La banda sonora fue obra del compositor neoyorquino Elliot Goldenthal, e incluye varios temas preexistentes de diferentes artistas populares de música norteamericana, particularmente de jazz y blues, esto debido a que la historia de esta cinta se desarrolla en Chicago, durante la época de la Gran Depresión Económica a principios del siglo pasado, más específicamente en la década de los 30. Recordemos que Chicago fue uno de los principales centros de desarrollo y consolidación de estos géneros tradicionales norteamericanos, como lo son el jazz y el blues.
Esta película está basada en el libro Enemigos públicos: la gran oleada criminal en América y el nacimiento del FBI, 1933-34, del autor Bryan Borrough, en el que se narra la historia de John Dillinger, carismático y famoso bandido o gánster de la época de la Gran Depresión, quien asaltaba bancos y era muy hábil para escapar de las autoridades, en la llamada era de los “Enemigos Públicos”, que se dio durante la primera mitad de la década de los 30. El agente de la FBI, Melvin Purvis, interpretado por Christian Bale, tiene como objetivo principal lograr capturar a este hombre, quien fue encarnado por Johnny Depp.
Elliot Goldenthal es un músico nacido el 2 de mayo de 1954 en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Además de ser compositor de música para cine, se ha dedicado a la composición de música clásica contemporánea. Sus principales tutores fueron el célebre Aaron Copland y John Corigliano. Más allá de no hacer parte de los grandes nombres en el mundo de las bandas sonoras, Goldenthal es reconocido por la crítica especializada como uno de los mejores compositores de la actualidad, por sus cerebrales composiciones, así como también por la innovación y experimentación que han caracterizado a la gran mayoría de sus trabajos.
Su momento cumbre fue cuando recibió el premio Oscar, Globo de Oro y el World Award Soundtrack en 2003, por su trabajo en Frida, cinta autobiográfica sobre Frida Kahlo, realizada Julie Taymor, directora de cine y quien es su esposa desde 1982. Además de participar de las producciones de Taymor, Goldenthal también ha trabajado con Michael Mann en varias oportunidades, así como lo hizo en esta película de Enemigos Públicos. Dentro de la banda sonora aparecen 7 cortes originales compuestos por el neoyorquino, los cuales se caracterizan por el dramatismo e intensidad que envuelven a esta historia.
El resto de la banda sonora se compone de temas preexistentes, de artistas como Otis Taylor, uno de los principales representantes del blues contemporáneo; Billie Holiday, la famosa "Lady Day", fallecida hace 50 años, una de las más importantes vocalistas en toda la historia del jazz; y también la cantante canadiense Diana Krall, esposa de Elvis Costello, aparece dentro de la cinta, en la escena de baile en la que se conocen John y Billie, interpretando el clásico tema "Bye Bye Blackbird".
Michael Mann decidió filmar esta cinta en formato digital de alta definición, y no en el tradicional de cinta de 35 mm. La crítica ha sido favorable para esta producción de la Universal Pictures. Nuevamente Johnny Depp asume un rol protagónico, lo cual demuestra que es uno de los mejores actores de esta década y, porque no decirlo, uno de los grandes íconos de Hollywood en los últimos tiempos.
